Audi S1 sports back is the relative baby of its S model line up and delivers stunning and accessible performance thanks to Quattro four-wheel drive and a 2.0 litre turbocharged four cylinder engine as well as all of the class and quality you would expect from Audi. One of the main selling points of the Audi S1 is its four -wheel drive system - the latest version of technology with roots in Audi's eighties rallying program . Although this eats into boot space , the result is the only car in its class with the surefooted grip of four-wheel drive.
Thanks to its Volkswagen polo underpinnings, the Audi A1 is sensible , but not sensational, from behind the wheel . However , the S1 version swaps the torsion beam rear suspension of the standard car for a more sophisticated four-link set-up , while revised front geometry , strengthened mountings and a faster standard ratio highlight the flagships bespoke nature and give it an extra edge over the normal A1 on the road .
Part of that comes from the engine . Theres no ignoring the fact the 2.0 litre TFSI is the star of the show . It's mated to a light but suret 6-speed manual gear box , which involves you in the experience further . With 228 bhp , it sprints from 0-60 mph in just 5.8 seconds , and blasting off with the security of all wheel drive in a real hoot . It will continue charging hard on to a storming top speed of 155 mph.
From a stand still the S1 can feel a little bit light at the front during flat out acceleration , but the hatch redeems itself when it comes to in-gear acceleration thanks to 370 Nm of torque . It means the S1 is very much at home on the motorway without without the usual noise that accompanies a hot hatch at higher speeds . Only bouncy ride let's it down.
